Accounting Program for Building the Profession
April 2–4, 2018 | AICPA, Durham | Free
The Accounting Program for Building the Profession (APBP), formerly known as the Accounting Pilot Bridge Program, is now accepting registrations for the 2018 program!
APBP is a program designed to equip high school accounting educators with the tools to level up their accounting classes and better engage their students. Through the program, the AICPA has partnered with state CPA societies, including NCACPA, to increase the number of high school educators trained to teach higher order accounting courses across the country. This initiative addresses the Pathways Commission recommendation that the profession improve its ability to attract high potential, diverse entrants into the profession.
The APBP was created in 2006 by Dr. Dan Deines, CPA, and was recently purchased by the AICPA. The course is modeled on a class Dr. Deines developed at Kansas State University with the goal of providing an advanced accounting curriculum, all the while creating a better experience for high school students to learn and become interested in the study of accounting. To date, more than 1,000 high school educators in 42 states have been trained through the program and are able to teach the course in their local schools. The training is offered free of charge, and a small stipend is provided to each teacher.
The training curriculum is unique in that it utilizes an integrated approach. The current curriculum can best be described as a combination of financial and managerial accounting taught at a level a college student would be exposed to in his or her first college accounting course. The teachers are provided with:
- Daily lesson plans and assignments
- Pre-written exams with answer key
- A textbook, including teacher’s notes and PowerPoint presentations
- Access to online teaching resources
- Continuous support from APBP trainers
One of the trainings, sponsored by NCACPA, will be offered at the AICPA office in Durham on Monday, April 2 – Wednesday, April 4. If you or someone you know may be interested in attending, click for more information and to register.
