Who should apply for a Foundation scholarship?
The Foundation is seeking applicants who understand the critical role that CPAs play in our society and who are eager to join a profession built on a commitment to serve the public interest. The CPA of the future must have the ability to analyze complex information and communicate it in ways that people can understand.
The Foundation encourages applications from students who:
- Enjoy finding practical significance in abstract ideas
- Have strong interpersonal skills
- Are technologically adept
- Highly disciplined and
- Equally productive whether working alone or with others.
Applicants are asked to provide information demonstrating that they possess these traits or have the potential to develop them.
What types of scholarships does the Foundation award?
The NC CPA Foundation, Inc. has three scholarship levels. Based on your eligibility, the application will automatically default to the scholarship you qualify for. All applicants must be NCACPA members to apply for a scholarship. Student membership is FREE and may be obtained here. Prior award winners are eligible to apply for scholarships through the NC CPA Foundation.

HEAR STORIES
Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Foundation has the unique opportunity to award scholarships to students looking to pursue a career in accounting. We caught up with past scholarship recipients Matt Mahler, Marianne Moore, and Mark Sint.
Here are their stories:

In the spring of 2017, I was diligently searching and applying for scholarships when I stumbled across NCACPA and learned about their triangle student night event. Attending this event allowed me to connect with several long-standing members of NCACPA and hear about the various scholarships offered by the NC CPA Foundation. I applied for a Foundation scholarship and received the award in August, 2017, just as I was starting the MAC program.
In the time since I received the award, I finished the MAC program, completed an internship with PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), passed all four parts of the CPA exam, started a full-time position with PwC, and became involved with the SOAR Committee.
I’m hoping to spend a few more years in public accounting before likely transferring into industry—though I’m unsure the type of position I want to hold as there are so many opportunities available to CPAs! Outside my career, I have enjoyed serving as a member of the SOAR Committee and making a difference in local communities.
Lastly, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the NC CPA Foundation for awarding me the scholarship that jump-started my career and introduced me to this profession.

My name is Marianne Moore and I am a student at East Carolina University. I am from Turkey, North Carolina. I have had internships at the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in the Financial Crimes Unit, Dixon Hughes Goodman as an audit intern, and an upcoming internship at EY in forensics and integrity services. After I graduate in May 2020 with my BSBA in accounting, I will begin pursuing my MSA at East Carolina University. I plan to get my CPA license during this process! I am excited and looking forward to the future.
NCACPA has helped me more than I could have imagined. I have been blessed to receive the undergraduate scholarship for two years in a row now. This scholarship has allowed me to be able to focus more on the academic side of school and less on the financial burden. I love that NCACPA allows students to be members for free—it gives students a great resource.
Read Mark's Story
Following two years at Clemson University, I took a break from my studies and worked primarily in the food service industry and for other small businesses. During this time, I moved to Asheville where I enrolled at UNC Asheville to study accounting.
Balancing a fulltime course load, work schedule, and personal obligations set in when I returned to college in fall 2017. With careful planning, determination, and a fervent interest in accounting, I made it to my senior year.
Working part time at a local tax firm during busy season, I’ve gained valuable skills, experience, and an understanding of what it will be like to be a CPA. While I mainly perform administrative and bookkeeping functions for the firm, I’ve also had the opportunity to prepare simple tax returns and meet with clients, which has only furthered my interest!
I am extremely grateful for the generosity of the Foundation, which greatly helped lessen the financial burden of finishing my degree. To know there are CPAs who want to help students finish their education means a lot to me, and I am proud to join a community of professionals who want to help others succeed.
