In May 2005, NCACPA’s Piedmont Chapter set up a scholarship fund in memory of High Point CPA, Horton Godwin, who passed away March 14, 2004. Godwin, who shortly before his passing retired as a partner with Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP (then Dixon Hughes, PLLC), was also an active member of the North Carolina Association of CPAs, serving on its Board of Directors and on several committees. The scholarship was established to assist accounting majors in need of financial assistance, who were attending local universities in the Piedmont Chapter area. Awards are allocated based on guidelines set by a committee.
I would like to extend a special thank you to my fellow committee members Bill Wilcox, CPA, JD, of Nexsen Pruet, PLLC, and Bill Benjamin, CPA, JD, of Higgins Benjamin, PLLC. I would like to also recognize and thank the local firm that has been a supporter of this scholarship fund since its inception. When the scholarship fund was created, Dixon Hughes, PLLC, as it was then called, committed to match any donated funds the chapter received and the funds brought in by the Chapter’s fundraising event. To date, Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP, has contributed $28, 277 in matched funding to the scholarship account. Our Chapter is grateful for its continued support of our effort to assist accounting students.
Since 2005, the chapter has collected $92,000 and distributed $71,000 among 76 students. In fall 2014, $7,500 was distributed among five accounting students, each at a different university in the Piedmont Chapter area.
The Chapter is extremely grateful for the support given by donators and matched by Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP. We look forward to the continued success of this scholarship.
