On February 10, Governor Roy Cooper signed SB 36, a bill that makes several technical changes to last year’s COVID relief bill. The new law contains a provision supported by NCACPA that allows practitioners to easily apply for the $335 Extra Credit Grant on behalf of their qualifying clients who did not automatically receive the funds last year. Tax preparers will be able to apply to NCDOR without having to submit an amended return.
The language is necessary because of a tax software glitch that omitted information on certain returns last year, and NCDOR consulted with NCACPA in creating the approved language regarding the bill’s Extra Credit Grant provision. The bill received unanimous support in the Senate and House last week and has been codified as SL 2021-1.
